THOR Develops EV Charging Station Concept for eRVs

Just a few short years ago, a battery-powered RV was the stuff dreams were made of. Today, it’s on the cusp of mainstream reality. One drawback, however, has been a dearth of EV charging stations for recreational vehicles. In late November, THOR Industries unveiled state-of-the-art 3-D renderings of an EV charging station concept designed to serve the comprehensive needs of electric recreational vehicles (eRVs), from small travel trailers towed by EVs to the largest Class A motorhomes, while enhancing an eRV traveler’s outdoor experience and mindset.

The concept illustrates THOR’s efforts to support the development of pull-through eRV-compatible chargers in destinations popular with RV owners, according to company representatives.

Key features of the concept include:

  • Broad road access points to facilitate easy ingress and egress.
  • Wide aisles between the pull-through charger islands.
  • Ample room to maneuver a large motorized eRV or an EV car/truck towing an RV.
  • Visitor amenities including restrooms, play areas and picnic areas.
  • Natural landscaping, including berms, trees and green spaces.
  • Sustainability features, including recycling containers, a rain harvesting system, and solar panels on the charger shelter roofs.

Lightship Details ‘Extreme Efficiency’ of its L1 eRV
Ahead of initial production scheduled for 2024, electric RV startup Lightship is offering a peek behind its solar electric curtain, detailing the efforts that went into its flagship L1 towable trailer to ensure it arrives as the more aerodynamic option on the market, according to a report by Eletrek.co.

Lightship is a San Francisco, Calif., and Boulder, Colo.-based startup that heralds itself as the first all-electric RV company – designing battery-powered trailers for the all-electric age. It was founded in 2020 by Ben Parker and Toby Kraus – two industry veterans with notable tenures at Tesla.

“We have followed Lightship since its inception, through to the official unveiling of its L1 electric RV trailer at SXSW this past March,” said the report. “This travel trailer is unique in its aerodynamic, modular design and comes equipped with its own all-electric powertrain and battery pack, alleviating the towing capacity for the vehicle in front of it.

“The result is a towable EV that will empower future owners to drive further and more efficiently without recharging as much. The L1’s debut last spring did not disappoint, but we have admittedly been left craving more details as an electric trailer that maintains its towing vehicle’s range has the makings to be an absolute game-changer in a stale RV industry.

“Today, Lightship shared details of the L1’s development process – particularly the keen focus its creators put on aerodynamics – as it works to deliver a true one-of-a-kind electric RV.”

Wholesale RV Values Up — and Down

Looking to sell your current RV for a newer model with more features? One way to gauge its value is by noting the prices paid at auction (wholesale). As reported in RVBusiness, the commentary released by Black Book — which publishes a family of vehicle appraisal guides — was mixed as winter arrives.

“Motorhomes continued their frustrating ‘one month up, one month down’ pattern again (although their overall direction is clearly declining), but towables were relatively consistent, with their values falling for the fourth consecutive month. Several dealers we have spoken to in the colder states have said they are basically shutting down for a few months, so future auction activity may be a little slower,” reported Eric Lawrence, Black Book principal analyst – specialty markets.

“Taking a closer look at the markets, we see that the average selling price for motorized units was $63,812 which is up $2,234 (3.6%) from the previous month. Towables came in at $18,941, down $1,197 (5.9%) from last month. One year ago, the average motorhome sold for $62,070 and the average towable unit brought $20,187.”

According to the report, the average age of motorhomes was nine years old (2014) and towables was five (2018).

KOA Reports Winter Camping on the Upswing
Graph showing 2024 booking percentages for campers and leisure travelers, and a graphic saying 74% of glampers have already booked for 2024, with a photo of a man and woman behind the graphic
It seems that winter camping is gaining adherents. The Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) Monthly Research Report – December 2023 Edition reports a dynamic picture of the camping landscape with a thriving interest in winter camping, notable intent for holiday travel, and a significant desire for camping gear on Christmas wish lists.

Approximately 33% of campers intend to go winter camping, marking a clear shift towards embracing the outdoors during the colder months.

Of course, anyone who’s tried — and failed — to secure their favorite campsites for next year is also well aware of the need to book early. The report noted that nearly 6-in-10 campers have already secured at least one trip for the new year. This high intent continues to outpace general leisure travelers, of which only 18% have booked in 2024. Among campers, younger guests are most likely to have travel reservations for next year, including two-thirds of millennials (67%) or GenZ (66%).
